Olympic and Paralympic Games – London 2012

Director Jayne Pearce was appointed as Head of Press Operations (“Press Chief”) of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2008. For four years she built up a team that was second to none and planned and managed a Press Operation that was widely recognised as the best ever Olympic Press Operation, winning the AIPS Best Press Facilities award in the process.

The 3,000 strong team of paid staff and volunteers were responsible for services to 6,3013 accredited press and photographers.

As well as venue media centres in each venue the team planned and managed a 31,000 square metre Main Press Centre that was open 24/7 and was home to 81 private offices for international news organisations. 3,052 rooms were reserved by media, over 14,200 news stories were published by the Olympic News Service and nearly 13,300 physical cables were installed for the media internet connectivity.

Olympic firsts / innovations included providing cabled internet connectivity for media at every media and photo workroom desk and every tabled tribune position, free remote printing and a media info system (myInfo+) available on laptops for the first time.

Jayne also spearheaded a partnership with Sheffield Hallam University in England, developing three custom built modules to sit within university degree courses. The modules provided students with useful, real-life experience and knowledge; and provides the team with 150 well-trained and capable volunteers at Games time. Those modules live on and have enabled students to work on multiple major events since London 2012.

At previous Games Jayne was Director of Press Information in Atlanta 1996 – the Games that started the concept of news teams providing information for media across all venues, Venue Press Manager of the Olympic Stadium (Athletics, Football Final and Opening and Closing Ceremonies) in Sydney 2000, Venue Press Manager of the Athletes’ Village in Salt Lake 2002, Venue Press Manager of Ice Hockey in Turin 2006 as well as being an IOC Advisor for Nagano 1998.

Pearce International provided international expert support to the Olympic stadium during Beijing 2008 and provided contracts for over 100 international experts working as short terms specialists in Sochi 2014.

Andrew also has extensive Olympic experience – he was Manager of the Olympic Youth Camp in Sydney 2000,  Deputy Photo Manager for Ice Hockey in Turin 2006, Venue Media Manager for Mountain Bike and Canoe Kayak during the London 2012 Olympics and Venue Photo Manager for equestrian during the Paralympic Games. He was Venue Media Manager for downhill skiing in Sochi 2014.

Jayne has served on the IOC Press Commission, now IOC Press Committee, since 2012.

At the time of the London 2012, Paralympics Andrew was the venue photo manager at Greenwich Park. Greenwich Park, was the most high profile venue outside the Olympic Park, and was the centre of the media’s spotlight.

Andrew’s role as the venue photo manager saw him managing many 100’s of photographers, and he excelled on all levels. The photographers were from many different cultures and Andrew not only managed their expectations, but also made their time and Greenwich Park very memorable.

Andrew’s people’s skills are excellent and this was shown many times, not only managing a very large groups of photographers but also managing his own staff. Andrew is an extremely experienced photo manager and has a very calming manner under pressure. He is very good team player and works well under all manner of conditions. Andrew is not afraid of hard work and this was demonstrated at many time during the Paralympics at Greenwich Park.

It was a pleasure to have Andrew in my team, and I would have no hesitations in recommending Andrew for any positions in the future.

I was fortunate to work with Jayne throughout my time at LOCOG. As head of Press Operations she played a major role in both the operational planning and delivery of the 2012 Games. She represented the needs of her clients extremely well but unlike many others she was always willing to consider compromises and doing things differently if it was necessary for the greater good. When you know what Olympic Games involve, on all levels, then you can imagine what the duties of a Head of are: the organisation of your own department, interaction with other functional areas, staffing and so on. Jayne Pearce was Head of Press Operations at the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, and it is difficult to find the right words to do justice to her great work. She covered her functional area with perfect knowledge, without forgetting the human touch which you sometimes miss at big events. Jayne’s door was always open, and she did not only listen to the minor and major issues in her squad, but promised solutions and delivered them, too. As a true leader, she inspired and motivated, she was a real shining example… and she shared anecdotes, which you should hear the next time you speak to her. I loved every day with Jayne Pearce in London, and learned a lot.
